Singapore broke ground on Changi Airport Terminal 5 on May 14, 2025, starting construction of a terminal planned to handle about 50 million passengers a year in its first phase, with an opening targeted for the mid-2030s. The project is the largest single expansion in Changi's history.
Terminal 5 is being planned as an integrated transport hub, with connections to road, rail, and future transport links built into the design from the start. The first phase concentrates capacity in a single mega-terminal; later phases can extend it as demand requires.
The timing reflects long-range planning rather than current congestion. Changi is building now for the passenger volumes of the 2040s, on the view that Asia-Pacific air travel growth will outlast any single economic cycle.
