The most consequential travel gadget of the last five years was not a suitcase or a tracker. It was a pair of white earbuds, and in September 2025 Apple finally gave them a proper successor. AirPods Pro 3 arrived at $249, the same price as the Pro 2, with the first ground-up rethink of the line since 2022: a smaller, more stable fit, foam-infused ear tips in five sizes including XXS, and what Apple calls the world's best in-ear active noise cancellation, removing up to twice as much noise as the previous generation and four times as much as the original AirPods Pro.
The fit is the quiet revolution. Five tip sizes, including the new XXS, and the foam-infused design address the two complaints that have followed the Pro line since 2019: tips that slip during workouts and ears the standard sizes never suited. Apple says the smaller housing improves stability for more ear shapes, and the IP57 rating means sweat, dust, and rain are no longer a consideration. For travelers, the practical test is a red-eye: earbuds that stay put through eight hours of cabin dozing.
For the cabin, the noise cancellation is the story. Apple reworked the internals and the ANC microphones, and the foam-fused tips add a physical layer of isolation that silicone alone never provided. On a private jet the cabin is already quiet; on a commercial long-haul, in an FBO lounge, or in a hotel corridor at 6 a.m., the difference between good ANC and great ANC is the difference between arriving rested and arriving frayed. Battery life is up by about a third: eight hours per charge with ANC on, ten in transparency mode, and 24 hours total with the USB-C and Qi2 charging case.

The surprises are the sensors. Each earbud carries a custom photoplethysmography heart-rate sensor that shines infrared light 256 times per second to read the wearer's pulse, syncing with the iPhone's Fitness app to track more than 50 workout types and estimate calories, no Apple Watch required. Fitness+ subscribers get live stats during guided sessions, and the Workout Buddy feature offers coaching insights. It is the first time Apple's earbuds have functioned as health hardware, and for travelers who train in hotel gyms, it means one less device in the bag.
The other new trick is Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence. Two people wearing AirPods Pro 3 can converse across languages and hear near-real-time translation; with one pair, the connected iPhone shows live transcripts. At launch it covered English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish, with Italian, Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese promised later. It is a beta feature, and machine translation still stumbles on nuance, but for arrivals halls, taxi ranks, and restaurant tables, it is genuinely useful.

“With AirPods Pro 3, the most popular headphones take a massive leap forward, providing fantastic sound quality and the world’s best ANC of any in-ear wireless headphones,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. “Combined with an improved fit that provides greater stability for even more people, heart rate sensing, extended battery life, and Live Translation enabled by Apple Intelligence, AirPods Pro 3 take personal audio to the next level.”
The software around the hardware keeps maturing. Adaptive Audio blends transparency and noise cancellation to match the environment, Conversation Awareness dips the volume when you start speaking, and Personalized Volume learns your preferences over time. None of it is new to the Pro 3, all of it benefits from the stronger ANC and the better seal, and together they make the earbuds feel less like an accessory and more like infrastructure.
The practical notes: IP57 dust, sweat, and water resistance, a first for any AirPods, means rain on the tarmac is no longer a worry. The hearing-aid function is certified in the UK and EU. Bluetooth 5.3 supports lossless audio with compatible sources. And the price held at $249, which, a year into the product's life, makes the Pro 3 the default recommendation for anyone whose travel kit still runs on the original Pros or the three-year-old Pro 2.
