On September 18, 2026, Joby Aviation announced that an aircraft equipped with its autonomy technology had completed the first autonomous flight across the United States. The aircraft, a converted Cessna Caravan designated the J208, flew 3,199 miles with zero control inputs from its onboard safety pilot, concluding the eastbound leg of its 2026 Electric Skies tour in North Carolina's Outer Banks, near the site of the Wright brothers' first powered flight.

The Caravan handled autonomous taxiing, takeoffs, route navigation, and landings under remote supervision from Joby's Autonomy Headquarters in California and from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, at distances of up to 2,323 miles. Joby says the aircraft integrated into high-density airspace, including Phoenix Deer Valley, one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country, and rerouted around severe weather and thunderstorms in real time without prior familiarity with the airports it visited.

The eastbound route departed Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, California, on September 7 and landed at Dare County Regional Airport in the Outer Banks on September 14, with stops in Phoenix, Fort Worth's Alliance Airport, and Shaw Air Force Base. After the transcontinental arrival, the J208 flew a low pass near the First Flight Monument at Kitty Hawk before landing at Dare County Regional.

The flight builds on more than 400 flights and 800 automated flight hours in controlled and uncontrolled airspace, using the autonomy stack Joby acquired from Xwing in 2024. The system has been exercised in three major US military exercises, including Agile Flag, where Joby says it delivered replacement parts 24 hours faster than conventional logistics, and REFORPAC, where aircraft in Hawaii were operated remotely from Guam, nearly 4,000 miles away. Joby positions the technology for commercial freight, medical transport, disaster response, and defense logistics.

"This journey across America offers a glimpse into a new era of aviation," said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, in the announcement. "Autonomy has an important role to play in the future of flight, allowing us to connect remote communities, deliver critical supplies, respond faster to disasters, support military operations, and keep pilots out of harm's way."

The aircraft has begun a westbound return journey, with planned stops including Raleigh, Fredericksburg, Louisville, Wichita, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, and Portland.
