Marrakech is the rare destination where the planning is as important as the place. The medina is a maze by design, the heat is a season by season proposition, and the airport is close enough to the city that logistics are simple once understood. Here is the practical version.
Getting there
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) sits about six kilometres southwest of the city center, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, and is the main gateway for both scheduled and private traffic. One runway (10/28, 3,100 metres), open 24 hours subject to slots and permissions, with scheduled service to many European destinations. For private arrivals, one practical note from Victor's airport guide: Menara has no dedicated general aviation terminal, so private passengers use the main terminal and can arrange VIP lounge access. From the airport, the center of Marrakech is roughly 20 minutes by car.
When to go
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the months the guides agree on, when Marrakech is sunny without being extreme. Summer runs to around 38°C and rewards air conditioning and a pool; from December to February, days are pleasant but nights are cold, and riads without central heating can be chilly after dark. The High Atlas, visible from the city, is a year-round hiking proposition with the mildest weather from April to June and September to November, per the same seasonal guides.
What to know
The city is organized around a few anchors. Jemaa el-Fna is the main square, the souks fan out through the medina, and the Koutoubia Mosque's minaret (pictured above) is the landmark the rest of the skyline defers to. The Jardin Majorelle was originally designed by the French orientalist painter Jacques Majorelle and later taken over and preserved by Yves Saint Laurent, a rare garden with a fashion afterlife. The Bahia Palace is the other historic interior worth knowing about.
Two things to plan for rather than discover on arrival. First, the medina's streets are narrow and winding; a local guide earns the fee on day one. Second, haggling in the souks is expected, not optional, so decide your number before the tea is poured.

Marrakech rewards the traveler who arrives with a short list and a flexible afternoon. The airport is close, the seasons are honest about what they offer, and the city does the rest.
